I absolutely agree with everything you speak of to mental toughness and NOT going into a meet even thinking of losing...but not necessarily thinking about winning. As a competitive Taekwondo athlete, I have to go into the ring tough as nails and NOT think about the fact that I could get knocked out or seriously injured and just focus on MY fight and no one else's. Mental toughness is something that if you can learn and REALLY truly understand and put to use, can help you in ALL parts of life, whether its in sports or your job. Great article and good luck at Nationals.

Its always great to sit down at lunch and read a new blog post. The only downside is i can't reply till i get home. My mobile phone won't let me reply. Hope all is going well for you.

I totally love the q&a...another thing that is helping me. Without mental toughness everything you do lacks that potential to be the best in your A game. The quotes are amazing and so very true. I used to be like I have to win it's all about winning and I would have that attitude and I realized I had to be real and be like it's not about winning or losing it's about the preparation you do to get to the win and staying positive and working hard to reach that goal. To me I have no room for pessimistic attitude. If I lose I am like ok I need to evaluate what went wrong and do better next time so it won't happen again! Thanks for always keeping us informed with everything it's greatly appreciated!!

My brother's swimming coach shared your Q&A with the team yesterday. He's always telling the guys "VIsualize your Success", so your comments on Visualization confirmed what he's been saying all the time....BTW...Coach is a big Eddie Reese fan. Also, I bought my brother this DVD for Xmas: Eddie Reese on Freestyle....hope he likes it and finds useful.

I'm glad the coach thought my perspective was worthwhile! I am actually coming out with a freestyle dvd that will be for sale in a week or so...you're gunna need to check it out, it is great:)

OK. Then I will wait for your DVD before I order any thing on Freestyle swimming. Also planning on buying some of the GWG T-shirts for some of my brother's team mates as gifts for the holidays.

Garrett - you should be a motivational speaker. Every time I read something you've written about achieving your goals and all that, I feel like going out and running a marathon!! :)

GREAT Q&A!

I was telling my mom about you the other day, cuz she saw a picture of you with Phelps and the president, and she was like, who's the cute guy?? haha! and when I told her who you were and she finally remembered she was like, oh yeah, he's a good swimmer!

So - just so you know, you're getting a bit of recognition in Merced! :)

Thanks for sharing Garrett!

I would totally love it if you would buy the dvd. I will have a post about it as soon as it comes out.

Motivational speaking would be great. I need to practice a bit more and formalize my thoughts.

I love sharing this stuff!
